Dr. Saeb Erekat on Palestine’s First World Heritage Nomination: The Birthplace of Jesus

Press Releases
February 06, 2011

Palestine is home to some of the world’s most important heritage sites. One of the most significant sites of universal importance to humanity is the Old Town of Bethlehem and the birthplace of Jesus.  Palestinians long to share our patrimony with the world as protected and recognized UNESCO world heritage sites.

As part of the Palestinian government’s plan to develop its state institutions, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is spearheading this important initiative to protect one of Palestine’s most cherished heritage sites.

In January 2011, the Deputy Head of Tourism and Antiquities and Ambassador of Palestine to UNESCO, submitted Palestine’s first site to be considered and recognized as world heritage: The Birthplace of Jesus, the Church of the Nativity and the Pilgrimage Route.

Dr. Saeb Erekat said, “All Palestinians everywhere are proud of their diverse and rich heritage. This will be the first of many heritage sites Palestine intends to submit and share with the world. The Minister and her staff at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities have undertaken a phenomenal task to advance Palestinian aspirations and national interests. I commend them for their commitment and their exceptional work.”

On February 7, the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Dr. Kholoud D’aibes, along with the Head of the Antiquities Department, Dr. Hamdan Taha, will host a press conference in Bethlehem to launch this momentous event.
