The following summary tables and overview of events survey hostile Israeli activities during the period 01 August 2016 to 31 August 2016. The report includes a summary table of events, classified by type, throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip, in addition to a comparative table surveying events over the past three months. The survey is compiled from the Daily Situation Reports of the Palestinian Monitoring Group (PMG) of the Negotiations Affairs Department (NAD) of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The PMG monitors ground conditions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, including Israeli and Palestinian violations. The information reported through the PMG process represents data available at the time of distribution only.

In addition, Israeli navy vessels carried out 34 attacks on Palestinian fishermen and territory and Israeli aircrafts carried out 11 attacks on civilian targets.

Killings: A total of 5 killings were reported in the month of August 2016
Injuries
A total of 133 injuries were reported in the month of August 2016 (113 Palestinians in the West Bank and 20 in the Gaza Strip). Injuries included 12 children and a Journalist.
Arrests
During the month of August 2016, the Israeli military arrested 505 Palestinians (481 the West Bank and 24 in the Gaza Strip). The majority of arrests took place in the districts of Jerusalem (115); Ramallah (54); Jenin (43); Tubas (5); Tulkarem (18); Qalqiliya (11); Nablus (34); Salfit (8); Jericho (11); Bethlehem (54); Hebron (128). North Gaza (14) and Central Gaza (10) among those arrested by the Israeli military were: 35 children, 7 women, 9 fishermen, 1 University Student, and 5 Security Force officers.
Closure
Especially on Fridays, the Israeli military continues to intensify restrictions at checkpoints located at the entrances of Jerusalem, and to restrict entrance to the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in the old city of Jerusalem, preventing worshippers from accessing the Mosque. At the Qalandiya checkpoint north of Jerusalem, the Israeli military continues to prevent PNA registered civilian vehicles from crossing the checkpoint towards Ar Ram and Qalandiya as well as Dahiyat al Bareed. The checkpoint is overcrowded daily, particularly during rush hours, due to intensified restrictions and search measures applied by Israeli troops. During the month of January the Israeli military also continued to intensify restrictions at the Tayasir checkpoint and Al Hamra junction checkpoint leading to the Jordan Valley area, only allowing access to civilians whose IDs indicate District of Jericho residence or others holding special access permits. In addition, restrictions were intensified and civilian access was obstructed at the Za’tara junction checkpoint (separating the northern and central West Bank districts) as well as at the As Sawahira ash Sharqiya (the ‘Container’) checkpoint (separating the central and southern West Bank districts).
The Israeli military installed 485 flying checkpoints in August (compared with 433 in July and 272 in June) and as a result restricted the free access and movement of residents, merchant supplies and agricultural goods.

The Israeli military set up 485 flying checkpoints during the month of August 2016 and searched Palestinian civilians and vehicles in and around Palestinian residential areas in the districts of Jerusalem (37); Ramallah (93); Jenin (25); Tubas (2) ; Tulkarem (13); Qalqiliya (52); Nablus (71); Salfit (39); Jericho (29); Bethlehem (67) and Hebron (57).
Raids
The Israeli military carried out a total of 560 raids in Palestinian residential areas during the month of August 2016, including 554 in the West Bank and 6 in the Gaza Strip. The majority of Israeli military raids were reported to have taken place in the districts of Jerusalem (68); Ramallah (45); Jenin (42); Tubas (11); Tulkarem (45); Qalqiliya (36); Nablus (90); Salfit (32); Jericho (9); Bethlehem (66); Hebron (109); Central Gaza (2) Khan Yunis (3) and Rafah (1).
Attacks
A total of 261 attacks were reported to have taken place during the month of August 2016 (179 in the West Bank and 82 in the Gaza Strip).
The Israeli military carried out 234 attacks during confrontations between the Israeli military and Palestinians, 12 during raids, 36 attacks from Israeli military posts on civilian homes and property and 41 from Military checkpoints towards Palestinian residents and vehicle. In addition, Israeli navy vessels carried out 34 attacks on Palestinian fishermen and territory and Israeli aircrafts carried out 11 attacks on civilian targets.
Home Demolition
During the month of August 2016, the Israeli military demolished Palestinian homes and residential tents, which consisted of the following:
- On August 3rd 2016, Israeli forces demolished a residential Den owned by Iz Al-Din Abu Najma during their raid into Wadi Al-Dam area in Beit Hanina town.
- On August 3rd 2016, Israeli forces demolished 2 homes owned by Khalid Mohammad Musa Makhamra and Mohammad Ahmad Makhamra {Both Palestinian Detainees} during their raid into Yatta town.
- On August 4th 2016, Israeli forces demolished 2 residential Dens owned by Ali Suliman Malihat and Mohammad Ali Malihat during their raid into the West area of Al-Ka’abna located along Al-Mu’arajat road in North West Jericho city.
- On August 8th 2016, Israeli forces demolished a tent owned by Ibrahim Abu Haniya during their raid into Al-Jiftlik village.
- On the morning of August 8th 2016, Israeli forces demolished a tent owned by Ziyad Mahmoud Abu Kharabish during their into Al-Fasayil village.
- On August 9th 2016, Israeli forces forced the civilian Wael Barakat, from Ras al-Amud neighbourhood in Jerusalem, to demolish a building extension at his home, in order to avoid heavy fines after being handed a notice of demolition without a permit.
- On August 9th 2016, Israeli Forces demolished 5 structures in the village of Um El Khair east of Yatta town owned by: Abed El- Hazaleen, and Zeiad El- Hazaleen.
- On August 14th 2016, Israeli forces demolished the Apartment owned by the family of Mohammad Nassar Taryireh {who was killed by Israeli forces} in Bani Na'im town.
- On August 16th 2016, Israeli forces demolished 3 homes {including 2 homes owned by: Mohammad Al-A'q and Musa Al-Aq} during their raid into Beir Onah area in Beit Jallah city.
- On the Morning of August 16th 2016, On the morning of August 16th 2016, Israeli forces demolished 8 homes owned by: Ibrahim Muhammad Mustafa Shalaldeh , Faris Muhammad Yasin Shalaldeh , Mustafa Muhammad Mustafa Shalaldeh ,Ahmad Muhammad Mustafa Shalaldeh, Mahmud Muhammad Mustafa Shalaldeh , Ziad Mahmud Abd Al-Mahdi Shalaldeh , Walid 'Ibrahim Muhammad Mustafa Shalaldeh, Nabeel Shahadat Abdel-Hadi Shalaldeh .in Jurat Al-Khiel area located in Wadi Sa'ir.
- On August 17th 2016, Israeli forces stormed Khirbeit Al-Marajim village located in South Duma village and demolished a home owned by Tariq Dirawi.
- On August 24th 2016 , Israeli forces demolished a home 2 homes owned by Suliman Al-Hathalin and Shu'ayed Al-Hathalin in Um Al-Khier village located near "Karameil " settlement in east Yatta town.
- On August 24th 2016, Israeli forces demolished a home {under construction} owned by Nabeel Mohammad Mahmoud Al-Haliya for allegedly being built without a license.
- On August 29th 2016, Israeli forces stormed a Bedouin community located in east Jaba' village and demolished 5 homes owned by: Najeh Sara'ya, Ahmad Sara'ya, Raed Sara'ya, Fatima Sara'ya and Fahima Barakat.
- On August 30th 2016, Israeli forces demolished the family home of Mohammad Abdel Majeed Abu Rish Amayrah {A Palestinian Detainee} during their raid into Dura town.
- On August 30th 2016, Israeli forces stormed Sur Baher village and demolished a home {120 square meters} owned by Waseem Khalid Attiyeh for allegedly being built without a license.
- On August 30th 2016, Israeli forces stormed Al-Thuri neighbourhood in Jerusalem city and demolished 2 Apartments {under construction} owned by Eyad Neroukh for allegedly being built without a license.
During the Month of August 2016 Israeli forces occupied 7 homes and converted their rooftops into military posts in the following districts in the West Bank:
- On August 10th 2016, Israeli forces occupied the house of the civilian Zuheir Abed El- Majeed then converted its rooftop into a military post as they forcibly removed his family from the house while raiding the town of Hizma.
- On August 11th 2016, Israeli forces occupied a home owned by Ahmad Abdallah Ahmad then converted its rooftop into a military post during their raid into Assira Al-Qibliya.
- On August 13th 2016, Israeli forces occupied the home of Faysal Hussien Mohammad Sabih and converted its rooftop into a Military post during their raid into Harmala village.
- On August 14th 2016, Israeli forces occupied a home owned by Damien Salah El-Din and converted its rooftop into a Military post.
- On August 23rd 2016, Israeli forces occupied a home owned Eid Attah Darraj {which is located along road 443} and converted its rooftop into a military pots during their raid into Khirbithat Al-Misbah.
- On August 24th 2016, Israeli forces occupied the home of Khalid Marar and converted its rooftop into a military post during their raid into Budrous village.
Attacks on Public and Private Property
A total of 149 incidents of destruction and confiscation of Palestinian public and private property by Israeli settlers and Israeli forces were reported in August 2016 (85 in the West Bank and 4 in the Gaza Strip).
Attack on Public and Private property occurred as follows per District:
Jerusalem:
- On August 2nd, 2016, Israeli forces damaged in the village of Sur Baher a car fair owned by Mohammad Ilayyan under the pretext of unlicensed construction.
- On the Morning of August 3rd 2016, Israeli forces demolished a storage Den and 2 Livestock Barns owned by Imad Barak during their raid into Al-Nabi Samauel village.
- On the Morning of August 4th 2016, Israeli forces closed several merchants’ shops in the old city of Jerusalem in order to escort a group of Israeli settlers through the area.
- On the morning of August 8th 2016, Israeli forces stormed Jerusalem city and served a Military order for the closure of “Sa’ed” Foundation for Educational Consulting.
- On August 8th 2016, Israeli forces stormed the main office of “ Burj Luq Luq Social Centre Society” in the old city of Jerusalem in order to implement a Military order of halting renovation work on the building.
- On August 16th 2016, Israeli forces demolished an Automobile sales lot owned by Zakariya Mahmoud Musa {for allegedly being built without a license} during their raid into Anata town.
- On the morning of August 16th 2016, Israeli forces stormed Jabal Al-Mukabir neighbourhood in Jerusalem city and demolished a room {40 m2}
and the concrete fence surrounding the area which is owned by b Mohammad Ali Eidat. - On August 29th 2016, Israeli forces demolished 3 livestock dens owned by several Bedouin families after they stormed a Bedouin community located in east Jaba' village.
- On August 30th 2016, Israeli forces stormed Al-Thuri neighbourhood in Jerusalem city and demolished 2 Apartments {under construction} owned by Eyad Neroukh for allegedly being built without a license.
Ramallah & Al-Bireh:
- On August 4th 2016, a group of Israeli settlers stormed Wadi Qatf area located near “ Rimunim” settlement located in east Al-Taybeh town and stabbed 11 goats.
Jenin:
- On August 10th 2016, Israeli Forces caused material damage to the furniture of the house of the detained Fares Shwahneh during raid to Selet El Hartheh town.
- On August 11th 2016, Israeli forces demolished a Clay Pot factory and Granit and Marble mill owned by Rami Ayoubi and Waleed Ajaj {for allegedly being built without a license} during their raid into Barta'a Al-Sharqiya village.
Tubas:
- On the morning of August 8th 2016, Israeli forces levelled and destroyed a water pipe network (Approximately 11 km) {under construction} which would supply Drinking water water from Tubas city to residents of Khirbeit Yarza village in Al-Malah area.
Qalqiliya:
- On August 9th 2016, Israeli forces demolished a Den owned by Amar Ali Musa Abu Sharab during their raid into Jayyous town.
Nablus:
- On August 4th 2016, Israeli forces prevented several residents and farmers from paving an agricultural road from their agricultural land to Duma village.
- At dawn on August 8th 2016, Israeli forces obliged Abdallah Jamal Makhamra to demolish a storage Den and livestock Barn as well as pay a financial penalty amounting to 15000 NIS for allegedly building without proper licensing in Area C {Which is under Israeli Military and Administrative Authority}.
- On August 9th 2016, Israeli forces demolished a restaurant owned by Nael Rizqallah Thiyab Sakha and also demolished a home appliance shop owned by Ahmad Thiyab Sakha during their raid into Sabastiya village.
- At dawn on August 17th 2016, Israeli forces stormed Khirbeit Al-Marajim village located in South Duma village and demolished a home owned by Tariq Dirawi demolished a concrete fence and damaged a 3 km long road.
- On the morning of August 17th 2016, Israeli forces stormed Qusra village and demolished an Agricultural Den owned by Sameer Hassan and demolished the surrounding concrete wall.
Jericho:
- On August 4th 2016, Israeli forces demolished a Reception Hall, 2 Kitchens, a bathroom, a Livestock Barn and 3 water storage tanks owned by Ali Suliman Malihat and also demolished a building and a water tank owned by Mohammad Ali Malihat during their raid into Arab Al-Ka’abna area located along Al-Mu’arajat road {which connects Ramallah and Jericho} at the west entrance of Jericho city.
- On August 8th 2016, Israeli forces demolished a livestock Barn owned by Mohammad Hussein Hassan Al-Zayed during their raid into Fasayil village.
- On August 21st 2016, Israeli forces damaged the main entrance of Mujir Issa Hawash’s home after they stormed and searched it during their raid into Al-Oja city.
- On August 24th 2016, Israeli forces exchanged an Electrical Power Grid
{1000 Mega Watts} {which was funded by the Palestinian Authority to provide electricity to the village} with an Electrical Power Grid
{500 Mega Watts} but did not install the power grid to exchange the one that was removed during their raid into Al-Jiftlik village.
Salfit:
- On August 10th 2016, Israeli forces razed in the Bayada area located east of the village of Iskaka, an area of 20 dunums of agricultural land which led to the uprooting of 250 olive trees.
Bethlehem:
- On August 9th 2016, Israeli Forces uprooted and swept away 50 olive trees near Khalet El Nakhleh area, and Jabal Za'roor near Artas town owned by the civilian Ibrahim Abedeh.
Hebron:
- On August 8th 2016, Israeli forces demolished a concert fence surrounding the home of Jaibril Al-Sarahna located near Al-Fuwar camp junction.
- On August 8th 2016, Israeli forces levelled agricultural land and uprooted several Olive trees owned by Fareed Salem Abu Al-Haj in the area located between “Hagi” settlement and Al-Fuwar camp.
- On August 17th 2016, Israeli forces stormed Khirba area in Beit Ulla town and
levelled a plot of agricultural land {Approximately 15 dunumes}
and as a result up rooted 150 fruit bearing trees owned by Mohammad Khalil Abdel-Azziz Al-Alama. - On August 24th 2016, Israeli forces demolished a home 2 homes owned by
Suliman Al-Hathalin and Shu'ayed Al-Hathalin in Um Al-Khier village located near "Karameil " settlement in east Yatta town. - On August 24th 2016, Israeli forces demolished a water well as well as uprooting several Olive trees as they levelled a plot of land owned by Al-Dababsah families located in Khilat Al-Dab’ area in south east Yatta town.
North Gaza: Israeli Naval vessels damaged a Palestinian fishing boat owned by Eyad Rajab Abdel-Min’im Al-Hasi after opening fire towards it off the shores of West Beit Lahiya town.
Gaza: Israeli Military aircrafts damaged a steel mill owned by Hassanien family after launching missiles during an airstrike towards Al-Zaytuneh neighbourhood in Gaza city.
Confiscation of Public and Private Property
Jerusalem: Israeli forces confiscated tools from a steel mill owned by Mohammad Nayef Shwikiya in Al-Ram town.
Tubas: Israeli forces confiscated a Water Pump Motor owned by Mohammad Fayez Abu Matu’ and Eyad Hafith Daraghmeh as well as a water pipe network in Al-Deir area located in east Ein Al-Bayda village.
Nablus: Israeli forces confiscated a vehicle owned by Issam Najeh Shareef Al-Safadi and a Metal sawing machine owned by Sa’di Naji Al-Safadi during their raid into Orif village, confiscated 2 Pistols from 2 Palestinian Intelligence officers: Ali Najeh Al-Safadi and Issam Najeh Al-Safadi and also confiscated several tools owned by Assad Najeh Al-Safadi in Orif village.
Bethlehem: Israeli forces confiscated a cellular telephone and a computer owned by Mohammad Ismail Za’oul after storming his home in Husan village, Israeli forces confiscated surveillance camera footage from a vehicle Show room owned by Sari Abu Ajamiya in Al-Doha village and also confiscated 2 vehicles owned by Mohammad Mahmoud Abu Hussein and Raed Mohammad Taqatqa in Beit Fajjar town.
Hebron: Israeli forces confiscated a vehicle owned by Suhayeb Jabara Al-Fuqiya in Dura town, confiscated 3 steel sawing machines owned by Muhi Al-Din Al-Rajabi, Ismail Jamjum and Yunis Al-Zaru in Hebron city, Israeli forces confiscated surveillance camera footage from an Electrical Appliance store in Hebron city and confiscated a financial amount of 150000 NIS after storming and searching the home of Mohammad Masalmeh during their raid into Beit Awwa town and confiscated a vehicle owned by Omar Mohammad Ahmad Sarahnah {A resident of Al-Fuwar camp}.
North Gaza: Israeli Naval Officers confiscated a fishing boat as they detained 4 fishermen after their Naval vessels chased and opened fire towards a Palestinian fishing boat off the shores of Al-Sudaniya area in west Beit Lahiya town.
Settler Violence
36 incidents of Settler violence occurred during the month of August 2016 including:
Jerusalem:
On August 4th 2016, a group of Israeli settlers positioned near Qalandiya checkpoint and near Beit Hanina town lifted posters of “ The Islamic Awqaf” Minister: Yusef Id’eish with the slanders: “Liar, Drunk and Deceiver” written on the posters.
On August 14th 2016, a group of Israeli settlers stormed Silwan neighborhood in Jerusalem city and assaulted the child: Abdel-Rahman Al-Shuwiki (13 years old) {A resident of Silwan neighborhood in Jerusalem city}.
On August 24th 2016, Murad Ghassan Al-Rajabi was hospitalized with a fractured nose after he was assaulted by Israeli settlers in Jerusalem city.
Ramallah:
On August 4th 2016, Israeli settler stormed Wadi Qataf area near “ Rimonim” settlement located in east Al-Taybeh town, assaulted a woman as she was herding her sheep and as a result left her hospitalized with contusions and killed 11 sheep using a knife as well as setting fire to the surrounding area.
On August 13th 2016, Israeli settlers raided Ein Qiniya village and performed Talmudic rituals in the area.
On August 29th 2016, a group of Israeli settlers stormed agricultural land located in Sha’b Abu Hamalat area located in east Turmus’aya town and installed tents in the area in an attempt to confiscate the land then withdrew under the protection of Israeli Military forces.
Nablus:
On August 10th 2016, a group of Israeli settlers under the protection of the Israeli Military stormed Assira Al-Qibliya village located near “Yitzhar” settlement and installed tents in the area.
On August 10th 2016, Israeli settler ran over the civilian Mousa Mohammed Salman, Musalm 82 years, while he was herding his sheep near the village Talfee, which led to his death.
On August 23rd 2016, a group of Israeli settlers travelling in a bus stormed Nablus city as they attempted to enter Josephs’s Tomb area during which Palestinian Police forces guarding the Tomb chased them from the area.
On August 23rd 2016, Israeli settlers stormed Al-Bithan village and stoned several vehicles in the area.
Salfit:
On August 2nd 2016, Israeli settlers stormed Kafil Harris town and performed Talmudic rituals in the area.
On August 26th 2016, Israeli settlers stormed Kafil Harris town and performed Talmudic rituals in the area.
Jericho:
On August 22nd 2016, a a Israeli settler vehicle travelling along the main road in Al-Jiftlik village was throwing leaflets with "Anti-Arab" and Racist slogans
Bethlehem:
On August 10th 2016, a group of Israeli settlers positioned along the main road connecting Teqou’ town and Marah Rabah village and opened fire towards vehicles travelling along the road.
Hebron:
On August 7th 2016, a group of Israeli settlers stormed Al-Sahla area located in the old city of Hebron and assaulted the child: Yusef Abdel-Rahman Al-Rajabi (9 years old) { A special need patient} and as a result left him hospitalized with contusions.
On August 12th 2016, a Israeli settler vehicle travelling along the main road near Al-Samou’ town ran over Ibrahim Shihadeh Abu Awwad as he was herding his sheep and as a result left him hospitalized with contusions.
On August 29th 2016, Israeli settlers stormed the old city of Hebron and assaulted Ameer Al-Fakhouri and as a result left him hospitalized with contusions.
- Closure of Crossing Points
The Israeli military completely closed crossing points into the Gaza Strip, including access points within the Green Line, on 165 occasions during the month of August. The Israeli military closed crossing points within the Green Line on 105 occasions. It opened Beit Hanun (Erez) Crossing for 27 days for previously-coordinated humanitarian cases and foreign nationals and Karm Abu Salem (Karem Shalom) Crossing for 23 days for transportation of food supplies, humanitarian aid, and cooking gas. In addition to allowing in animal feed, construction cargo designated for UNRWA and internationally-funded projects was transported through the Crossing. Al Jalma crossing was closed 4 times during the month of June. Sufa Crossing was closed throughout the month. On the other hand, the Israeli authorities have continued to unilaterally close Ash Shuja’iya (Nahal ‘Oz) Crossing. Beginning on 02 March 2011, the Israeli authorities has also continued to completely close Al Muntar (Karnei) Commercial Crossing.
The Israeli military closed international crossing points on 60 occasions. Rafah Crossing was opened 2 times during the month of August. Yasser Arafat International Airport has remained closed since the outbreak of the second Intifada.
